Went to Aage yesterday, for some advice. Was pretty good actually. Think I settled for this here fine axe (when I get the money for a guitar, after my birthday on october 15th):

Supreme Roadster Deluxe

It doesn’t cost a lot, and it sounds fine. And it looks great, I love that particular Gibson-ish design. And the guy said that if guitar playing catches on with me, it’ll last me 2-3 years, then I’ll probably want a better one. I’m cool with that.

So I’m thinking of doing one of two setups:

1. Buy the guitar, guy a cable, buy some headphones - connect the guitar to my iMac, and play through e.g. Garageband, Logic etc. That way, I can have some fun with various amps, and can have some fun recording whatever noise I may be able to create.

This solution enables me to have some fun, possibly try to play over some garageband tunes. That is, when I get to that point sometime. It’s also the cheapest solution. Or it can cost as much as option 2, but I could then get a better guitar. Do I even need that as a beginner ?

2. Get a guitar pack, with bag, amp, guitar, cables, and then connect a set of headphones to the amp.

I see this as the more isolated way, since it’ll be just me playing through the amp then. I get a bit more gear - but do I really need that ? Costs a bit more, but for more gear, and I’m not sure I’m willing to get a bag and other stuff for the guitar, at the cost of the quality of the guitar (although quality probably doesn’t mean all that much when we’re in my end of the spectrum).

If you know anything about this - leave a comment on what you think, thanks :)

We sent Ziggy on vacation with my mom and dad for a week.

I know he’s having a blast, getting all of their attention, constantly. Throwing rocks into the sea, jumping on that big air-thingy on the playground, barbecuing with my dad (sure, he’s 2 years old my son – but that doesn’t stop him from nothing !).

He’s having the time of my life.

Meanwhile, I’m back here, missing him like crazy. I wrote a bit about it before during the childcare workers strike, but getting kids, then being without them – is a whooole other ballgame. Even if it is voluntary, and I know it’s great for all parties involved.

Might sound whiny to you, but I’m pretty sure most parents will agree with me, that they’ve felt this during some phase of their parenthood: Life becomes empty, to some degree, without your children.

Can’t wait to see him again. I think on the trip over there (it’s a 2.5 hour drive at 150 km/h ;) ), I’ll be listening to:

”Here comes the suuun, da da da daaaaaa… Her comes the suuun…”

On a different note (no pun), I am confirmed in my feeling that I need to get a guitar and learn to play it. Project starts October 15th. If all goes well, I can go and buy it October 16th.

I guess that would somehow be very fitting, since that’s John Mayer’s birthday. Considering that his music is what kind of opened me up to blues, bluesrock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, B. B. King (Before that, I guess Led Zeppelin and other 70’s rockbands eventually led to John Mayer).

You say computergames won’t ever amount to anything ? Well talk about a lifechanging experience, listening to “Woman” in Guitar Hero 2 (that’s what got me started).

It’ll do me good to get a creative outlet, cause I feel my fingers and arms tingling with excitement every time I hear some good guitar, these days.

On a third note, a buddy and I are checking out the possibilities of some Wing Tsun here in Århus. I was going to go for Krav Maga, a friend of mine did that some time ago, and recommended it.

But since the only Krav Maga “dojo” in Århus isn’t in the Krav Maga Federation, I don’t see that as a viable option.

So Wing Tsun it is. More on that later on. I have no idea if it amounts to anything, but I’ve wanted to learn something like that for the past 5 years, and now I feel like it could actually happen. Feel ready, somehow.

Last but not least, Where The Light Is is released tomorrow. Trying frantically to get a copy, fast.

And that’s it for now…

TryJM posted a new story, that Lobbert from the Netherlands taped all of the Den Haag concert, something John Mayer apparantly encouraged fans to do. So, cool :) Or, well… he captured most of it, there are breaks. But it’s still a good concert video, good quality sound and video :)

The blogpost is here.

The mininova torrent is here.

And if this poses a copyright problem of any kind, send me a mail :)

The Top 5

I love super hero movies. And Will Smith just looks awesome as the drunken don’t-give-a-fuck Hancock.
Hancock

I always loved Mike Myers movies. From Wayne’s World to Studio 54, to Austin Powers. And this one looks amazingly funny, with Justin Timberlake as the porn guy.
The Love Guru

Dogma was one of my favorite flicks. As are most movies who mock or question organized religion. This one looks mad funny :D
Religulous

About the blood line of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. Because conspiracy theories never get boring, no matter how (un)real they are.
Bloodline

I don’t care what you think: I love Kevin Costner movies. He tells good stories. And I loved The Postman too, so there !
Swing Vote

The Top 10

I once had City of Lost Children. Graphically it was amazing I think. This looks great too, and kinda exciting.
City of Ember

Just seems like a great story, and I love the social realism flicks.
The Edge Of Heaven

If this is anything remotely like American Beauty… I’ll love it.
Towelhead

This kinda seem to me a bit like Big Fish. I love those weird, exaggerated stories.
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Never underestimate a good action flick and gorgeous women. This seems to have both.
Wanted

The Runner Up’s

Fun story about the underdogs becoming the cool ones. Or “The Goonies Switcheroo” as some call it ;)
The Rocker

StarWars as an animated movie ? Looks cool though…
Clone Wars

Robert de Niro. Al Pacino. In the same movie, playing guys their age. Gotta love it, gotta see it.
Righteous Kill

Again, the underdog type movie. But looks fun, looks… happy happy joy joy :)
Bottle Shock

Love Frank Miller’s way to express himself. I loved Sin City, I’m gonna love this one too probably.
The Spirit

Tim Robbins. Need I say more ? Ok. Tim Robbins playing a guy who hates noise, and go superhero on noise’s ass.
Noise

The Ones I’ll Probably Watch On A Lazy Sunday

The oversilly type movie. But looks kinda fun.
The Foot Fist Way

I play World of Warcraft, occasionally. But taking it to this level is just… Mmm I dunno. Geeky in an interesting, but very “I would NEVER do that !” way.
Monster Camp

Love the prehistoric squirrel from Ice Age, but the third time it’ll probably be a sunday evening movie with my stepson.
Ice Age 3

Documentary on steroids. Is probably interesting.
Bigger, Stronger, Faster

Yes I am, yessir !

I had to console myself, and I didn’t have the TRY! album by John Mayer Trio yet, so bought it on iTunes.
Friggin’ excellent album, go get it if you haven’t got it already.

I didn’t know Ray Charles‘ track “I Got A Woman” was on there, but I love that track (also the version by Kanye West/Jamie Foxx).

And John Mayer on guitar, with Ray Charles on the mic - don’t get much better than that, does it ? :D

No sir, it don’t.

I gooot a wooooman…

I’m normally not much into concerts.
But this particular one, I would’ve loved to see.

Got there too late though. Tickets were all sold out. And no cancellation tickets either.

So John, welcome to Denmark, I hope you give a friggin’ great concert :) And to all the concert goers, enjoy. Really, enjoy, cause if you don’t, karma will getcha :D

In response to http://scriptolog.blogspot.com/2008/06/scripting-sysadmin-meme.html, and Hal Rottenberg’s PowershellCommunity.org advisory board mail :)

How old were you when you started using computers ?

I was… 11 I think. It was the usual suspect: Commodore 64. After that followed a C128, then an Amiga 500. Then I got on the PC trail…

How old were you when you started programming?

My first programming experience was with Pascal, back during school. I must’ve been 18 or 19 (so 15-16 years ago)

What was your first machine?

A 386DX. A total beast for its time. Was running DOS 6.0.

What was the first real script you wrote?

Mmm, it was during a Windows 2000 migration where I was the desktop lead. I don’t remember in detail, but it was related to post installation of MSI applications, after the RIS installation of Windows 2000 Professional.

What scripting languages have you used?

VBScript, PowerShell, and an assortment of smaller languages for special use.

What was your first professional sysadmin gig?

For Olivetti as an internal suppor/sysadmin back in 1996.

If you knew then what you know now, would have started in IT?

I’ve always wondered that myself, actually. My original wishes were to become a helicopter pilot. But since I’m red/green colourblind, that kinda didn’t work out.

So I guess I grabbed at what I kinda always did anyway, geeking out :D

I still sometimes wonder if there isn’t something other than IT. Or if I should take a different path, in the IT world. I still haven’t decided, cause I can’t make my mind up what else it should be :)

Oh yeah, now that I think of it: A product developer at Apple (specifically on iPhone or Apple TV, cause I reeeeally have some ideas for Apple TV ;) ), product developer at MicroSoft (Windows Mobile) or some device manufacturer with the willingness and the balls to really put out THE device.

Well either that, or do what John Mayer does… :D

If there is one thing you learned along the way that you would tell new sysadmins, what would it be?

Learn the basics of how a script should be put together. E.g. learn what functions are, learn the flow statements, learn the logic, and the logic behind object oriented programming/scripting (the last part could only be added because of PowerShell :D ).

If you know that, language doesn’t really matter that much anymore.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had scripting?

Learning PowerShell. The language is absolutely amazing, and I really wish I had more time I could spend on scripting it during my daily work.

Who am I calling out?

Hal Rottenberg.

I planned on doing a series on switching from Windows to OS X for some while now.

But I wanted to get some OS X mileage first, so I actually had something to compare with.

So coming up soon, a series on the whys, the hows, the whats and the whens, of switching from Windows to OS X :)

… and I got him back this morning :)

We were at a furniture store yesterday, and they had a FatBoy hammock on display. So of course I had to try it.

iPhone slipped out of my pocket, and we left the store not noticing.

Fortunately the staff found it, and called Tania today (she was the last entry in my call log).

Phew.

Yesterday I had to switch to my trusty old Nokia E61 in a rush, put in the new SIM card, get it all ready.

And having to use my old E61 kind of got me thinking about some stuff.

Mainly - my iPhone isn’t as easy to write on as my E61. But it’s more fun. It’s sexier. Does more of the fun stuff, in a more fun way.

If I needed a true work horse, I’d probably get me one of the new Nokia E71’s. But as it turns out, I’ve become religious. It’s not that I mind the Symbian OS. It’s that I’ve come to love the Mac experience :)

So much so, that even my once favored phone platform, Windows Mobile, now feels like a step down the ladder. Not because it’s less cabable. But because of the lacking UI.

I’ve also noticed, from reading a lot of the blogs and newsmedia out there, that everyone’s trying to come up with reasons why the iPhone won’t get much further than it is now. Why it won’t break into the corporate space. How some other phones can do more than the iPhone.

And you know - it’s true ! Some phones definately do more. But you know what’s the surefire sign that the iPhone is a success ?

Everyone else uses it as the bar they need to reach, and beat. Everyone’s talking about an iPhone killer. iPhone kill me this, iPhone kill me that.

Fact is - the iPhone has its limitations, it has its flaws.

But it’s dead sexy, and it has the best user experience I’ve ever seen in a mobile device. And so, you live with its flaws. Guess it’s not much different than women :D

Looking very much forward to July 11 when the new firmware arrives. Or rather, July 12, when it’s been hacked, cracked and beaten into submission, so I can put it on my iPhone.

Cause really. Apple, what’s up with you guys ? You create one kick ass device, then do everything you can to harass the buyers who want one. Get with the program Job-o !

Anyway. It’s back. And I guess it’s good to be reminded of the reasons why you love to use a certain piece of technology. I guess it’s good to sometimes be reminded why you love someone/stuff, period.
